LAGOS LIVING || Moving to and Living in Lagos

Eyin temi,

It has been 2 months since I moved to Lagos - one of the reasons why I haven't been here, on the blog. I missed sharing with you and decided that 2 months is enough time to be away from you guys. I can only hope that you have missed me too.

I moved to Lagos during the Easter holiday. 2 things made me relocate to Lagos.

  1. To be close to family and friends
  2. To find a new job, gain more work experience and knowledge and hopefully move up the HR ladder

I think I have achieved both.

My siblings and some of my closest friends live in Lagos. As much as I love living alone in a different city (Ibadan) and I enjoyed the independence and freedom it gave me, I missed the support and care that comes from having my family and friends around me.
I loved living in Ibadan. Ibadan will always be my city of independence and growth, where my time was mine, and I spent it how I liked without interference. I learnt some big life lessons in Ibadan but I believe I am at a point in my life where support and care are essential to me and for me, I find these 2 things with my family and friends hence my move to Lagos.

I'll be truthful, living alone can be very lonely sometimes, and I hated the feeling of loneliness. Now, I feel better surrounded by people I know, without a shadow of a doubt, genuinely care about me and support me. A support system is key. I can not overemphasized this. A mother with a newborn baby understands the significance of the support she receives from her mother or mother-in-law the first few months of her baby's life.  I do not have a newborn baby!!! lol. It is just an example.

I also got a new job in Lagos. Yippeee!!!! I quit my job in Ibadan when I made the decision to move to Lagos. It was time to move and I did not want anything to be an excuse. Guys, I was scared. I kept thinking 'what would I do for work?' 'how would I survive in Lagos?' 'what if I don't get a job on time and stay at home unemployed for months?'. I just prayed and allowed God's words to keep my mind.

I know what I'm doing. I have it all planned out - plans to take care of you, not to abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. -Jeremiah 29: 11 MSG

So I gave my notice and began to put my desk in order. I also started sending out applications. There's this HR Blog I love to read that posts HR job vacancies every Friday. If you're an HR professional looking for a job or want to change jobs or you're looking for a blog that discusses HR issues in Nigeria, you should definitely check out NaijaHR (https://naijahr.com). I sent out a few applications and I got two invites, went for the interviews and then I did not hear from them. I was scared. Doubt laid siege to my heart. At a point, I wanted to change my mind about quitting and relocating to Lagos and just stay in Ibadan. After all, our people say 'a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush'. But I kept praying and I also got good advice from my sisters and friends.

My last week at my old job, I did not have a clue about what I was going to do when I move to Lagos. Some of my colleagues asked me and my answer was always the same 'I'm going home' 'No, I don't have a job waiting' but little did I know that my Jesus had worked it all out. I got a call from one of the companies I had interviewed with, that last week, offering me a job in Lagos and they also wanted me to start right away. Splendid!!! So I just moved from one job to another with ease (God's grace).

LIVING IN LAGOS

I'm not a JJC to living in Lagos. I was born in Lagos and I worked in Lagos for like two years before I was transferred back to Ibadan so I know and have experienced Lagos traffic and rush hour madness. In Ibadan, I would wake up at 7am, leave the house at 7:45am and still get to work on or before 8am. Coming to Lagos, I knew that had to change. In Ibadan, I lived alone so my time was mine, more importantly my space was mine. Here in Lagos, I live with family and while my time is mine, I'm still trying to get used to living with people and sharing space with them after staying on my own for a long time. This is not easy. Having just a piece of the house when I'm used to owning the whole space is something I'm still getting used to.

But don't think I'm not enjoying Lagos, I'm having the best time here. I'm closer to family (we live together), hanging out with friends and I have adjusted fine to my new job and colleagues. I crack them up, I crack everyone up. I'm the unofficial comedian in all my relationships, still waiting for someone to give me the title officially.

Work has been stressful especially learning the ropes in a new company. Thank God, HR is HR but policies and industries are different. I close late and once I am home, all I want to do is eat and sleep so writing on the blog for the last two months has been a dream but no more! say it with me 'NO MORE' lol. I think I've got my groove back and my writing juices are really flowing so I can put honest hard work in here. Therefore, please expect content here. In fact, please demand content here, it is your readership right, lol.

So for now, that's all folks.

  9. Hi Fehintola, it's been a while since this post, so this question might be late but.. How's Lagos life treating you? Do/Did you find it difficult to adjust after some time away? Do you think you'll be moving back to Ibadan or to a different city?
